Terra Sonora was founded in Curitiba, in 1994. The group’s vocal and instrumental work is a pioneering in Brasil, based upon an extensive survey of ethnic and tradicional themes from various regions of the world. The work is a result of researching, transcribing,  and arranging themes, done by Plínio Silva, and developed by the members of the group, who are professors of the Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná, the Faculdade de Artes do Paraná, and the Conservatorio de Música Popular Brasileira, in Curitiba.

The richness of their repertoire is apparent in the diversity of regions and culture covered. These songs and tunes have a common characteristic – they are all manifestations  of humankind in relation to different situations of life. Thus, one can get acquainted with rhytms and musical styles that range  from the elegies,  that narrates the misunderstandings of a couple or the difficult day-to-day life in the countryside, to festive and joyfull songs as well as themes related to work, praising family and nature, and other themes used in social and religious celebrations.

Therefore, because of the musician’s virtuosity, several instruments can be used outside their traditions. For instance, they play the steel drum, (a Caribbean drum) in themes of Chinese or Norwegian origins ; in other themes, that come from countries such as Hungary, Greece and Ireland, - among others -, the Brazilian sonority of the viola caipira is present. Likewise, Arabic percussion is present in several themes and contexts.

Terra Sonora is also preoccupied in intermigle their work with elements  of the brazilian culture, that are often forgotten or dismissed. This is very clear not only in the use of Brazilian percussion and the already mentioned viola caipira, but specially because of tradicional musical elements are inserted in their work. The group’s  repertoire includes modas de viola, a seresta, and themes of brazilian North-Eastern tradition.

The group treats music as universal language, where rhytms, feelings, and themes, because they are common to human kind, dismantle frontiers, whether they be temporal, geographical or cultural.

For their live performances, apart from the songs present on the record, the group has over 200 themes collected by Plinio Silva.
